Family Festivities

Did you used to love the festival vibe, milling around listening to music you love or discovering new tunes, and dancing the day away with a beer in hand – is this a distant dream since you had kids?? If this sounds like you, don’t let it be a thing of the past…There is now over 350 festivals in the UK alone this summer, and loads of these are family friendly and make children a massive part of the scene.

Don’t get me wrong, I know it won’t be exactly the same as going with a bunch of mates and staying up until god knows when. But, these picks have great music, amazing stuff to keep the kids occupied and educated – plus some absolutely gorgeous settings. Three of the best…

Camp Bestival – 31st July – 3rd August, Lulworth Castle, Dorset.

Lulworth Castle makes for a tranquil setting, and it offers loads of fun programmes for the kids to get involved in. Including a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 50th birthday takeover, with a Roald Dahl museum, crafts and storytimes. Whilst Funk Da Cirque offers something for the older kids, with dancers and acrobats showcasing their moves.

There will be tonnes of music going on, with the likes of Laura Mvula, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and as a mega treat Basement Jaxx will provide the live Sunday night finale.

Green Man Festival – 14th-17th August 2014, Crickhowell, Brecon Beacons, Wales.

This intimate festival prides itself on being the most family friendly, with thousands of families returning year after year. The family campsite is extra close to the kids entertainment which includes fun free workshops and activities. Another stunner, its amongst the lush Welsh hills and boasts 24 hour entertainment, comedy, poetry, music and art.

They have a 24 hour festival license, so why not persuade your friends and their kids to go, this way you can alternate childminding duties so you can check out the night parties and DJs…

Festival No6 – 5th – 7th September 2014, Portmerion

No festival can offer a more unique location than No6, its a total fantasy destination with its Italianate-inspired Welsh coastal village complete with sea and mountains. The woods open themselves up during the festivities offering a whole host of joy, from live bands to surreal street theatre.

The bespoke line up includes all sorts of sounds including favourites such as London Grammar, Pet Shop Boys and Kelis and djs such as, Todd Terge and Julio Bashmore. Plus a plethora of kids activity – kids theatre show, a kids rave, Robin Hood Games and a kids protest march through the village. The best bit is the kids carnival on Saturday afternoon, where you are invited to adorn your carnival gear…
